EVENING STAR. Ax Evzpuant’s FrarsrNat Feettxc AND Arrecrion.—While a wagon drawn by several clepbants was passing our of- fice yesterday, the following story was told, which we vouch for as true: Last season a menagerie visited the village of Johnstown, Herkimer county. When the cavalcade left town it passed over a bridge which the road crossed, leaving two elephants to bring up the rear. ‘these were driven to the bridge, but, with the well-known Sagacity of the zace, refused to cress. The water of the creek, which flows through = gorge in theslate formatien, presenting at that point banks of precipitious character and thirty feet in height, was low, and by taking a course across a corn field, a ford could be reached. But the proprietor of the corn field refused to allow his proper- ty to be so used, except on the payment of an exorbitant sum, and this the agent of the menagerie refused to submit to. Accordingly, the elephants were again driven to the bridge, and again they re- fuced to attempt the crossing. “They would try the structure with ticir great feet, feel cautiously along the plank with their proboscal fingers, but each time would recoil from making the dangerous eXperiment. At last, however, goaded by thesharp, iron instrument of the keeper, 2nd ac- customed to obedience. they rushed on, With @ screatn, helfof agony, half of an- ger. ‘The result showed the prudeat pre- science of the animals to have been cor- i.et;_the bridge broke, and went crash- ing to the bottom of the gorge, carrying With it both the monstrous beast. “One of them struck upon its*tusk and shoul- der, breaking the former and badly inju- ring the latter; the other was, strange enovgh, unhurt. Now was shown the most singular and remarkable conduct on the part of the brute which had escaped. Its comrade lay there, an extempore bed being provided for its comfort, while no tere ptation, no force, no stratagem, was sufficient to induce the other to leave and proceed with the main portion of the car- avin, which finally went on, leaving the wounted beast and its companion under the charge of the keener. Day day the suffering ercature lay there, rspidly fai move. At ihe ereck cover danger it overflow and drown the disabled elephant. The keeper de- sired, therefore, to get it up and make it walk as faras # barn near by, where it would be out of danger, and would be better carcd for. But it would not stir. He coaxcd, wheed.ed and scolded, but all to no purpose. At las enraged ke seized a pitch fork and was about plunging it into the poor things flesh, when the com- pasion wrenched the fork from his hand, broke in fragm_nts, and flung the pieces from him; then, with eyes glaring and every evidence of rage in its manner, ec wer 1t stoed over its defenceless and wound- ed friend 2s if daring the keeper to ap- Pproaca: which the man was not so green as .o c& with cruel purpos nimal lay there un- istied that it ¢ uld e other quietly followe! tbe kee and showed no desire to return. If this Was not reason mingled with an affection some men might pattern afier, weshould like to know what to call it.—Buffalo (iv. Such was my covditiou for «welve months that the physicians and all who saw ne said I mustdie. While in this condition, | was carried to the watering places in Virgmia, Tennes- see and North Cai a, but was net benefited by any water to which I was taken. While on my way home, I stopped a week at Rutherfur‘ton, a amai| village in North Carolina, to try the effect of some Chalybeate waler in that place. About the jast of the week, I went into a drug store to pei some medicine for =. child and myseif. There were several of the village physicians in the store, and one of them seemed to take some interest in my case and, afer asking me some questions, said he had beena dyspeptic, and had been greatly bene- fitted by the use of “Dr. Hoofland’s German Bit- ters,” prepared by you, and he insisted that | would try the Bitters le also called the next day at my room, and insisted so much that I would try them that [asked him to get me one bottle. He did it, and I commenced taking it as directed, and { do ray { was more benefitted by it than all the water end medicine I had ever taken. After reaching home one of my neighbors came to me for a prescription and medicine, (he ® dyspey tic,) and t gave him near'y nl! the Bitters I had left, waich effected much good in his case.
