EVENING STAR. Local Intelligence. Wasaixcron Aovepuct.—We understand that the work upon the aqueduct is going on 'y. Several frame buildings have heen F up this Spriog at convenient points of the ine, where large quantities of work are to be done These are much more comfortable than the ill-ventilated shanties commonly seen upon public works, and will give. h, ascormmo- dation to forty or fifty mecha: ed laborers, who will be able to live comfortably and cleanly in them while engaged upon the work ‘The importance of such arrangements to the health of those, employed, cannot be overrated; and we think that contractore generally would do weil, even as a matter of dollars and cents, to follow the example of care for the working- men, here shown by the cfficers of the Govern- ment Besides bailding these houses, the quarry at Seneos bas been opened. From the 15th of March to tho 26th of May, some 2,500 cubic yards of rock were excavated in the cuts near the Groat Falls; between 300 and 400 cubio yards of dry masonry built; from 400 to 500 feet of the conduit treneb shaped and prepared for the brickwork ; about 25,000 bricks laid in tho coaduit ; scme 50 or ’ 60 lineal feet of tunnels completed, and work begun on culverts 7,8,12,and 15. The pits for these culverts ars nearly completed, and the adjacent embankment has been began. The brick contractors are delivering about 12 to 15.000 bricks a day, and have been pre- paring their works up the canal fora larger delivery in a few weeks + _ All these, with the prepa #i-nof thecraner, derries, boats, scows, and tools generally for such a work, have emplo some two han- dred men; and the line of the work, especially Besr the falls, now presenta a busy scene. We understand that masons and stone cut- ters are now employed upon the culverts above specified, and upon the conduit itself. Innocent Pastimgs—Wo are among those who believe that innocent, public or private, amusements notonly have atendeacy to avert Crime, but to advance virtue. ‘They who errc- weotsly conceive that it is a sin to emile, and that propriety demands a tarrying at home. and an elongated visage, ezist‘on crab-apple nutriment, and are apt to become sour toward all with whom they may occasionally be brought in contact. A man, at peace with himself, and brimful with good nature, cannot fail to be a blossirg to those who surround him. Therefore, whatever induces to such a happy condition in life, is worthy of encour. agement. Of euch smusemerts ig the Straw. berry Festival, being held i: Franklin Hall, corner of D. and Ninth streets; the proceeds to be devoted to the comfort of the parentless ones—the orphans of St. Vincent’s Asylum The Grace Church festival, too, will be contin- ued a fow evenings longer, in the new concert hall adjoining the Star buildings. In addition to the luxuries of strawberries and ice cream:, are those of pleasure company, including, of course, the presence of ladies, without whom bachelors especially would not, it is likely, bs attracted. — A™ axpsewe Exteetamsyvent.—Dr. Miller. | the uewly elocicd Alderman of the Second Ward, entertainea “ome two hundred of his ) friends and supporte:: in the recent election, last evening, at Willard:’ Hotel. Tho supper was served up in the best «:yloof the cele- brated House in which it wes given, and ex- thusiasm, good taste and hilarity ruled the hour. Appropriste speeches were made by Dr Magruder, Dr. Miller, and Daniel Rat- clfffe and Ferdinand Jefferson, [sq , the last mentioned being a newly elected Councilman fer that ward. The speech of Mr. Jefferson took those present by surprise. It abounded with oricina!, strong, and pangent thoughts, and satisfied all who beard him, tha: Kuow Nothingiem is to fird hima very ugly custo- mer inthe City Hell. The company separ- ated at 11 p m, highly delighted with their hospitable host, the entertsicment, sud each other. — TrRavetixe Accowxopatroxs —-The Alice G. Price, Captain Samuel Baker, commenced her regular trips on the 29th ultimo, leaving Washington at zix and Alexandria at seven o’elock, on Tuesday and Friday mornings, touching at the different landings on the Potomac. In addition to the accommodation thus afforded to persons retiding on or visiting the country skirted by the river, the boat brings garden and farm produce to cur mar- Kets. The Istter featore in the programme is important to our citizens. inasmuch as tho Alice G. Price may, in time, while increasing the vegetable supplies, be the means of re. ducing the prices of that description of food Captain Baker seems to be aa appropriate name in this connection. Concert or Cuassic Music.—We, in yester- day's paper, alluded to the announcement that M’ile. de Boye, the accomplished pianist, in- tends to give the lovers and admirers of classic music a grand treat on Monday evening next, at Carusi’s Saloon, aszisted by the moat emi- nent talent of the city, under the direction of Prof. T. Alrend, who, as a violincelloiat, pro- bably hes no superior in this country. Mr. Samuel V. Noyes, wili, we learn, call, during the week, at the places of recidence of the musical people, in Washington, with sub- scription lists ; when, it is hoped, he may ob- tain adegree of encouragement which will net only be gratifying to the accomplished ar- tists, but tothe courteous and gentlemanly agent bimaelf. Taz Rev. Masox Nosuz, chaplain in the United States Navy, and for several years past stationed atthe Washington Navy Yard, is, wo learn, going to sea in the frigata opgress, in that capacity. This gentleman, it will be Tecollected, in 1852 or 1353 commenced bis labors as @ missionary in the Seventh Ward, and the result isa flourishing congregation, and a hsudsome Presbyterian church edifice, costing about $15,000, with a debt of one or two thousand dollars resting uponit. He is now absent frem thecity, but will shortly re- turn to it, and, before embarinng. will preach afarewell sermon. He will leave with the regrets of hia entire congregation. 4 Connectiox.—In the hurry of copying Yesterday, to be in time for the Starof that day, the protest of Mr. J.C. Fitzpa‘rick claim- ing the seat in the Board of Aldermen from the Third Ward, which had been awarded to Mr. Busey, we made him say ‘I do bereby vehementy protest against the holding or oo- eupying of that seat by Samuel C. Busey, Ac.” Oar error was in substituting the word wehe- mently for solemnly, woich rendered a digni- fied sentence, es written, ridiculovs, as Printed, It resulted only from the want of time to Verify the copy by the ozigiva!, befure putting it to press. The occasion of it was the burning of some loose scraps of paper. and the fencing in the Tear of the National Intelligencer <fico. It is| "pposed that eomshody w intenly applied the Match to the comb ietill« wsterial. The dam- ge Wastrifling, and the il ues were supprozsed belore the arrival of the machinos, , Do Normixas.—We have for a long iime been aware that there are very many « Do Nothings”’ in this city; and now have to state that there is an organisation of them, aa a; from the following notice, which has n sent to ua for as ap advertisement : “ Notice.—The members of the Do Nothing Scciety are requested to attend a special meet- ing, to be held at the Park Hotel, June 12, at seven o'clock, p. m. By order of Hy. Horstcamp, June 11—1t* Secretary.” We take the liberty of placing this notice our local column, with a view of insuring its perusal by all who are interested in the ob- jects and aims of the organization. Centre Market was plentifully supplied with all the good things of the season; but it required a very small basket to away a doliar’s worth of the vegetable animal productions, so capieny displayed The tices were not only exorbitantly high, es eretofore, but uniform; and, therefore, a trotting round the market premises a view of finding reduced rates, was futile. Beef, fifteen, and mutton and lamb twelve- and-a-half cents a pound: strawberries from twelve to twenty cents a quart; string beans fifty, and green peas thirty eeven-and-a-half | ** conts a peck ; butter the last named sum per pound, and eggs twenty two cents a dozen. The misfortune ia that the appetite cannot be contracted or accommodated te the prices. The quality of the articles purchased, how- ever, accords wiih the length of the purse. Tae Mzrrinc to Nienr —It should be rec- ollected that there is to be a meeting to-night of the Union Association, at Harmony Hall, whore all who were defrauded of their right to votein tho late municipal election, and, indeed, all anti Know Nothings among us, aro invited to be present. — Tur Union Gvarps —The first grand mili- tary and civic excursion of the Union Guards will take place on Thursday next. By refer- once to the advertisement in another coluwn, it will be seen that two boata have been en- gaged for the occasion. The famous White House is to be the scene of the pic-nic and the beautiful Potomac of the moonlight excursion. Stock Saus—Yesterday afternoon, Me- Guire, auctioneer, sold at his rooms $25,000 worth of Chesapeake and Ohio Canal pre- ferred bonds, at 334, to Messrs. Burke and Herbert, brokers of Alexandria, Virginia. GEORGETOWN CORRESPONDENCE. Gzonenrown, June 12, 1855. Yosterday, the schooner William Henry, Bailey, from Baltimore, with a cargo of aait to James A. Magruder, of curcity, in attempt- ing to get through the draw in the Long Bridge, ran on a snag which was concealed from view on one cf the sides of thedraw, and dameged her bottom to such an extent that sioeunkinafowmincttes. The salt will be & total loss, bat the vessel, we presums, will bs raised again, as we learn that the captain succeeded in running her on the flata before she wentdown. This is another proof, strong as holy writ, ef the great injustice done to the people of Georgetown by the continuation of this outrageous obstraction to their commerce. This accilent of itself, to say nothing of the multitude of a less magnitude which are con- stantly occurring, and the continual diffcul- ties, delays, and anuoyances that this bridge im poees on vessels generally, will be sufficient to deter many from trading to our wharves, particularly if the obstruction is saffared to continue where it is; and if they consent to come et all, it will bo only upon condition that our merchants submit to additional bur- dens in the shape of extra freights, which, of course, would bea drawback to the goneral trade of our city. We doubt very much whether there can be found in the Union an- other community who would have submitted We learn that @ brother of Mr. Riggs, of the firm of Riggs & Co, has purchased the beautiful property upon our heights, formerly owned by the late Col. George C Washington, for $17,500. Also, that Major Scott has dis- posed of his property known ag the cedars, and for many yegrs the residence of the late Cel. John Cox, who was Mayor of Georgetown for twenty odd years, fur $19,000 This is also a lovely epot for a private rosidence, being eituated in one of the most quietand bealthy paris of our city, immediately upon its northwest border. Our people ave become “ great” forexcur- sions; scaicaly a week elapses that one or more does not leave our wharves. Yesterday & party left on board the steamor George Washington, in company with an excursion from your city, for the White House pavilion, and to-morrow morning the eteamer George Pago, Capt. Rither, leaves at 8 o’clock, with ancther for Fort Washington, vig: the Sabbath School of the Methodist Church. Mr. Amos Hunt, who resides on Capitol Hill, we learn, was yesterday appointed by the directors, agent for the Potomac Fire Insay- ance Sempany for your city. Spectator. eer rene SSeS Grear Day’s Work. — learn from the Miners’ Journal that on the 18th day of April last. eight thousand four hundred and five tons of coal in 1,76 cars were weighed onone of Pairbank’s Track Scales in use by the Mine Hill (Pa ) Railroad ecmpany, which is about one thousan i tona more than was ever weighed io a single day before. About one-third of the time was not occupied, which would give the capacity of the scales for s constant day’s work at about twelve thousand tons. The soale is about the longest ever made by the Messrs. Fairbanks, mae probably the longest in the world, it being one hundred and twelve feet longer than an ordinary ‘city lot,” and capable of receiving and weighing at once, and with a single weigh beam, a train of eleven cars loaded with coal. New Yor«, June 12th —The Tribune and Herald have the majority and minority reso. lutions of the Know Nothing Platform Com- mittee. The former (according to the Tri* tune) declares (hat the American party ars not responsible for past legislation, but that it is the imperative duty of Americans to inter: pose for the purpose of giving peace to th: country, and perpetuity to the Union As there is no dishonor in submitting to laws, ghe National Council deems it the best guarantee for peace to abide by the existing laws. The second resolution declares that Congress has no right to legislate upon slavery, or to exclude any slave State from admission int» the Union; and interference with the exist- erce of slavery in the District or Territories would be a viola ion of the compact by which Maryland ceded the District of Columbia to the United States, and a breach of national faith. The minority resolution declares the re- peal of the Missouri Compromise an infraction of the plighted faith, and that it should be re- stored; and if that fail, then Congress should refuse to admit any State tolerating slavery, which shall be formed out of any portion of territory trom which slavery was excluded by that compromise.
