Parpox.—John Rolli John Gorman, Wm. Crane. Wm. D. Bailey, John Barry, and Thos. Sullivan. boys from ten to twelve years of age, convieted at the present term of the Criminal Court for riot. and sentenced to imprisonment jn jail for terms ranging from six to eight weeks, have been pardoned out by the Presi- dent of the Uni States, on the petition of citizens, who made the application on account of the tender age of the prisoners, and the further apprehended danger to their morals by an association with the adult inmates of that institution. Col. Charles Lee Jones drew up the petition and interested himself in obtaining signatures, and it was presented to the Executive by Maj r Joseph A. Berret, into whose hands the pardon was placed. A CcrE FOR THE HeADACHE.—A correspon- dent has kindly furnished us with the follow- receipt for the headache : «The present extreme beat of the summer hss caused considerable debility in the ner- vous system, especially with the female sex, enusing that most painful disease, ‘‘head- ache. For its immediate relief, take a piece of red blotting paper, (such as is used in the public departments,) fold: four or five folds, in site sufficient to cover the whole of the part effected, dip it in a basin of ice water, and ap- ply it, pressed close tothe head. As it ver; readily absorbs water, it also evaporates ac- cordingly, and with the hand repeat the cold water—the paper remaining—every five min- nutes. and soon till the pain ceases, which will be at the Kearieci time, tee an re The at power of the paper is, that in the evapo- ad the water, it absorbs the heat from the head, which results in quick relief. Depend upon it, this is no hoax. “Tae Fesenan or Mason Nicnonsox took place yesterday afternoon from his late resi- dence on Capitol Hill. The religious services were perfurmed by Rev. Smith Pyne. His re- mains were followed to the tomb by a la: number of friends and acquaintances, both in rivate and public carriages; there were also in the cortege officers of the army and navy, and a full company of marines under the com- mand of Capt. Tansill. His horse was led in the procession, bearing the military equip- ments, while the uniform of the dece: was spread over the coffin. The Marine Band was present in fall foree, and performed an im- pressive and magnificent dead march, com- posed = ssly for the oceasion by the highly talented leader of the band, Professor F. Scala Livixne ON THE ee many of our young mechanics, who find it almost im- possible to work during the hot season, make up small parties, who hire boats and go to shady spots on the river to enjoy themselves. Catfish feasts appear to be their favori‘e meals. Itis fun for them to strip off their shoes and stockings. and wade to the flats at low tide. and by feeling among the tall grass to find the large black-backed fish, fresh and pure, in numbers sufficient for their sustenance. Care- Jessness frequently sickens these novel fisher- men, and they are forced to return to the ciiy before they wished to leave their pleasant company. To spend the days agreeably is very easy, if a little attention is paid to the old rules of Izaak Walton’s club, ‘Keep in the shade; hide the bottle where you never eau find it; and don’t try te eat more than you want.”’ Pic Nic._—The Sabbath School of the Meth- piscopal Church South had a pic nic yesterday, at Arlington, that delightful place of summer resort. They were joined by the upils of a kindred institution, of Alexandria, Tixinis. A very pleasant time was passed by all who were present on the vecasion. The hospitable proprietor, G. W. P. Custis, Esq.. not only ilagled with the gay assembly. but made them a little speech. the sentiments of which were peculiarly gratifyirg The only regret is that the party were not enabled to return until near midnight, having been obliged to wait the floodtide befere they could cross the river. Such ar- Yangement: have been made as will insure fatisfaction. Considering the hot weather, and the easy means of escape for some hours from its oppre influence, we ean scarcely doubt that our friends of both parties will car- ry down the river with them large numbers of excursivnists. GeorGetown, July 21, 1855. Only one Board (the Common Couneil) of our City Councils was in session last night. The fellowing business was transacted : A communication was received from the Clerk of the Gorporation, covering his quarter- ly accounts for the quarter ending June 30th; referred to the Board of Aldermen. Mr. Osborn, from the committee of waysand means, to which was referred the Aldermen’s bill for the benefit of R. P. Dodge, reported the same to the Council with the recommenda- tion that it pass; which was adopted. The resolution of Mr. Bangs authorizing cer- = ip JLab cnr ne laid over at the ast meeting, was then taken up, and passed. Mr. Myers presented the memorial of D, W. Edmundson, t., asking the Corporation to enact some police regulation to prohibit the watering of horses, and other animals at the public pumps: referred. Mr. Myers, from the committee on claims, reported back the Aldermen's bill ai propri- ating $28.50 for the benefit of J. M. ‘oteler ; passed. Mr. Myers, from the same committee, re- —— a bill appropriating $303.50 for the nefit of William Jewel!, $33.25 for the ben- efit of Michael Terrill, $14.91 for the benefit of W. H. Tenney. and $100 for the benefit of eee ; laid over temporarily. “tr Osborn proposed the following message to the Board od Algermen: eronce * Gentlemen—We have disposed of all the business now before us, and propose that when the two Boards adjourn this evening, it be sine die.” The upper Boar] not being in session, the Couneil adjourned to Friday evening next. We regret exceedingly that in addition to the one or two other unimportaiit errors which accidentally crept into our notice, yesterday, of the examination at Mr. Bowen's academy. (in consequence of the bed manuscript, inci- dent to the hurry of writing.) that “a»"’ was unintentionally placed before the word ‘+ en- viable,” as it conveyed a meaning wholly dif- ferent from what was intended. We have been assured this morning by a gentleman direct from the Great Fall« thet the report which was in cireulation in ou: city yesterday that an epidemic had broken out among the hands engaged upon the Wasbing- ton Aqueduct is wholly untrue. The ern geatiemen have been elected officers of the Rough and Ready Club for the ensuing year: J. M. Palmer, president; T. §. Blackman. vice president: George Moore, sec- retary; F. M. Baker, which has been chartered for the exeursion of “Our Club.”’ on Monday next, will stop at Page’s wharf. in Washington city. and not at the Fourteenth street wharf, a= stated in the ad- Yertisement, and at Blagden’s wharf, Navy Yard. The most extensive preparations are heiug made for this excursion, and from present indications, it will be one of the largest and most brilliant which has left our city this sea The popularity of the buat and the captain, to say nothing of the excellent repu- tation of the Club, is cufficient to insure a crowd. We have no change to note in the flour or grain market since our report of yesterday. SPECTATOR. ———_~-e-—____ ALEXANDRIA CORRESPONDENCE. ALExANDaIA, July 21, 1855. On Thursday, about 11 o'clock, as Mr. Wil- liam A. Atwell, conductor on the Warrenton stem of the Ohio and Alexandria railroad, was coupling two cars together, he fell between, and Was so mangled that he died in a short time. His remains were brought to our city by a committee of Warrenton gentlemen, and on yesterday his remains were committed to the tomb, a detachment of the Hydraulion Fire Company acting as pall bearers. Mr. A. was a young man of some twenty-two years, of kind and accommodating disposition. “ During some months of his life he resided at the Wash- ington navy yard, where he leaves many friends. Yesterday, some of the pied of the Pio- neer mills machinery took fire. The alarm was quickly given, but long before our fire- men could arrive the danger was.over. The alana of fire on Thursday night was caused by the light of a conflagration in the direction of Washington. The storm, on Thursday night, was one of the heaviest ever known in this section. Houses were unroofed, fences blown down, trees up- rovted, and great damage done to the growing corn. The barn of Me. Roberts, Cameron Mills, was partially destroyed. The residence of G. D. Fowle, at Burgundy, and Felix Rich- ards, at Valincia, and Col. B. S. Ashley, on Patrick street, were strack i lightning. The Methodist Episcopal Church south Sab- bath-school took @ fine excursion, yesterday, to Arlington Springs. ‘Arrived there, they united with their Washington friends, and spent a most pleasant day. The I. O. U. B. of Mount Vernon Band give another of their pleagaat excursions to Arling- ton next Monday. The Young Catholics’ Friend Society of Alexandria are about to build a fine hall over the present St. Jolin’s academy. We learn that the building is to be so constructed as have under the same roof a fine Sunday-school rvom, @ chapel for the children, and a hall library, &¢., for the Young Catholic’s Friend Society. Ido not mean to say that it is adapted to al! constitutions, or that it will afford the same relief in all cases; for, of course, I can know nothing about that—but of what I have seen of the effects, I would not hesitate to use it, in any and every case of Serofula, with persons for whom I felt an interest, or over Whom I could exercise intluence or control.
