Dantviriox oF ‘Fruisvsters.”’—The title of filibusters is a mere corruption of the Eng- lish word freebooters—a German term, im ed into Engtand during the Low Country wars of Elizabeth's reign. It has been erroneously traced to the Dutch word fiy-boat; but the Jesuit traveler, Charlevoix, asserts that. in fact, this species of craft derived its title from being first used by the filibusters, and not from its swiftness. This, however, is evident- ly a misieke, as Drayton and Hakuyt use the word; and it seems to be of even earlier stand- ing in the French language. The derivation from the English word freebooter is at once seen when the (=) in filibuster becomes lost in pronunciation.—G. W. Thornbury.
