There hare also been discovered new mine* in tho neighborhood of Monterey, I.oa Angeles. and S*u Die*i>. which are said to be very productive. The account < re ceived here from those places do not. Itowwvcr, go Into particulars. but merely ssy iu general tornu that they yield abundant ly. It will be seen, therefore, that though the want of rain ban been a Very serious drawback to the prosperity t.f the country, the miners having lost several month'* lal>or in digging earth which they cannot Wa4> for the want of raiu. yet there is a good prospect opening before u.- for the summer, ami it is to be hoped that the bright anticipations which are formed may be realized. Agriculture, which lias hitherto been a very subordi nate interest iu our State, now bids fair to a-suui^ its proper position in relation to a wealthy and prosperous community The high prices of agricultural produce of nil kinds, have induced large numbers to undertake the cultivation of the earth, and the fertilo lands of the river bottoms and valleys are being rapidly settled by in dustrious and energetic limner The prospects fir an abundant yield of every description of produce were very excellent, until the long-continued and uriu<utl drought has induced npprcheusiuns that th ? crops in mail} part* will l>e a total failure. Merlon fears are en tertained for the grilling of the cattle, which, if there thould not be any more rain, will be very scant ; and probably occasion iinmcu c I.iss of stock. Irrigation on an extensive scale is ivcomnicuded, and in some in stance* liaa been undertaken an a remedy for the defi ciency t.f ruin. Altogether the prospect* for the yi"!d i f crops in portion* of the recent agricultural settle ments are not encouraging, th >ug!i there are other por tions where the drought has ::ot in appearance effected so much injury. As an evidence of the forwardness of the season, the beauty of the climate, ami the fertility i of the soil, it may be mentioned that on the ilrst day of March there were ;*> acre* i t barley, only a few mile.-! distant from San Kranrisco, which averaged ten inches in height New potato*-; had ill jo been dug and brought to S:ui Francisco on the 1st March. l'i litical matter* at tlii.< time are rather quiet, there being a lull after the excitement consequent upon the attempt to elect a Senator iu the place of Colonel Fre- : mi. nt. Hot li parties are now preparing for the contest, which will be waged in the en- uing legislative clootioD, into which the senatorial question will euter ??* a dis turbing element, causing it to be more vigorously con tested than heretofore. In consequence of the protracted votings for Senator, occupying two week*, the legislature lias not transacted any business or passed any act* rela tive to State matters The debt of the State still reiimina in the same unsatisfactory condition, and the State Treasurer has bccu for some days in San Francisco, vainly endeavoring to effect a loan in pursuance of the act of the legislature authorizing one for the suppression of Indian hostilities. The Indian Commissioners have been for some days on the borders of the Indian country, endeavoring to cll'Ct an interview with the leading chiefs, with a view to rtv otiate a treaty with them, but in vain. Th" Indians are all withdrawn into their mountain fastnesses, whence they make occasional incursions, driving off cut tic. and sometimes killing a solitary miner. A volunteer force of seme 200 men is collected and stationed iu the neighborhood of the passes to the mountains, awaiting the result of the commissioner*1 attempt to negotiate with the Indians. Should they fail, we fear a sanguinary uud protracted contest will ensue. The commissioner* air bow awaiting the result of an attempt which i* Icing made bv a portion of the chiefs to bring iu the principal 1 ones, for the purposo of forming a treaty. The ijulet of our city lias been disturbed by a retort to ' the court of Judge Lynch, in the ease of two men siv- j pcrtcd <>f having knocked down Mr. Janson in lii* own j store, in the nns-t public strwt in the city, just after dark, and robbed him of ^'i.dUO The jury enuid not agree *s to thu identity of the men. aud they were, there- j fi re, left tothe regular courts of law.
