EDITED V JOiEt DBIBCON. at ri FAITHFUL AND BOLD. NIfW OR LEANM: a FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30. 1838 aO DESTRUCTIVE LOSS OF THE STEAMBOAT b GEN. BROWN. h rom uTnIrT To FORTY LtVI LOsT.! This awful calamity occurred at Helena in Ar. kansa,, on Sunday last, at noon, the 25th Novem. a her. Few, if any of the many frigh tful acctdents p which have of late years happened to steamboats ft on the western waters, have been attended with aircumstances so exciting, and sos reprehensible, as those which marked the destruction of the Gen. t Brown, Capt.Samt. Clark. By this most deplors his event between thirty and forty individuals tave last their lives from what appears to be the most wanton and unnecessary risque. From ins tormation we have received from several who witnessed the calamity, it appears that the "Gen. Brown" rounded to on Saturday night, about 60 miles above Helena on a signal front the Empress, owing to a flat boat with 52 torses in it, which she had in tow, having sprung a leak. The ill fated Capt.Clark tock on board about 30 of the animals - and proceeded ott his way down, as Capt. Russell, of the Empress, had expressed his determination s not to make any race then, or ever, and the Capt. of the Gen. Brown stated that his boat was crip. pled from the t"Washitgton"having run into her, sad carried away part of her wheel atod wheel. house. On the following day, Sunday, about noon, the Empress apprached Helena where site saw, j the ltBrown" holding on to her steam as if fIr the purpose of a contest, but just as the Empress came ahreast of ter she exploded with such fear ful force as to jar the Empress to an extent that frightened many of her lady passengere. On wil w, -esaing the calamity, Capt. Rusesll, with the best feelings of humantty, ordered his boat to be y. rounded to in order to render every poesihld assis. 5 oance, but as lIe approached toe was warned off on aO the plea that there was powder on board the ill n, fared "Brown." But Capt. Russell tas not to be t` scared from his duty as t n an and a christian, by y, any lersonallrh, so mating his boat fast above rg the wreck, he headed his whole force in entering the burning heap of ruins which the exploded r steamer presented, and rescued from inevitable destruction six beings who were pent up in the Y. forecastle' Without food, without refreshment, without even a coat to cover him, he worked with might and main until 3 o'clock on Monday morning, and no eulogy can be too warm for the noble condcti he displayed throughout. Of the 18 cabin pas sengers (mules) known to be on board. ive only were savod. The captain, mate, two engineers, two pilots,I no elerk, carpenter, and tar keeper, are known to fallen victims. The first clerk was the only ollicer saved, in consequence of his runotig up to the pott oflice. Ono way passenger, on in. habitant of lHelenn, had searcely put his foot on board belore the explosion sent him into oternity, even while his wife, family, and iriends were bidding him 'lorewell,' Owing to the fact that lot few of Ito pnesrengers had registered thair names, it is impossible to come at an accurate list of the suflerirrers; the best we could obtain will bIe found below. Among them is Mr. Horace Blanchard, an estimable citizen of Vicksburgr whose body was found atript to the waist and fl .ting oner the bank, about a mile and a half below. On his person, sewed into his linen, was found a smit of nioney amounting to $11,000, which with other valuables were given to his friend and townsman Mr. George who was him self severely scalded. Dr. Pryce, of Vickaburg, whose body was not found, had with him $7000. During Sunday afternoon the steamer Emperer, Gnnl. Harrison, and Couttnodore came up but none save the former rendered any assistance to the sufferers. Ten of those severely, dangerously woundeu, were found & taken care of. Mr. Long, one of the victims, fell through the skylight of a toat aS the wharf, and died on lieing picked up. The greater number of the horses were killed. Frost the se cond state roost in the cabin forward all wans blown up, and all parties agree in the fact that the explosion arose from the Engineer holding on to the steam, with the intent, it is auppnsed, of sver taking the Empress which was passing quietly on her way. This is another proof of the inutilityof the Steam. boat Law. Until some legal measures are taken to ensure good and discreet Engineers, it is utter. ly uaelers to legislate upon the subject. ais of Passeng lost on board ssamer Gen. At a meeting of the cabin passengere on board the arrocuer Empress, Capr. Jro. W. The chairman having oated rtheob jec of the meeting; on motion, it was resolved, that a committee ofthree be appointed to draw up a preamble and resoloutins expressive of their feel egs towards Capt. Ruserli, whereupon Doct. Harris, A. C. Bulitst and B. T. Wright were ap. pointed the committee, who presented the follow. ing, which were oons iii, ously adopted: Thhat steamboat disasters, accompanied by great lose of life and property occasioned by the ignoe rance, gross negligenceor desperate, reckicesness ofthose to whose caruageco oat they are entrusted have of late become of such frequect occurrence as to render a voyage upon the western waters. one of apprehension and peril: that the oflkrers on many of our boots so far from profting by the ex perieoce of the past. seem to be driven on by an inratuatico which hrzzards the lives and property of their passengers and shippers for the empty clat of performing a trip an hoor sooner than it tres been heretofore accompotshed: that Ieotwi - standing these disasters have attracted the oaten. tion of the national legislature, we believe that the great and sure remedy against the evils rests alone with the pollic at large, and that it the tra velling pubice were to select u vessel with refer. ence to her safety, and ble experience, diligence, and capacity of trer captain and otticers, rather than to her speed, an explosion such as it has been our painful chanceo to witness in the recent blow up of the Gen Brown, would be of sore occurrence: that having been eye witnesses of the anguish, woe and urspeapoable horror of that awful cae*s trophe, we are impelled by a sense ot public duty as well as a reeling of regard for Capt. Ruossotl to make puIcc the following resolutions: Resolved, That we recommend joo. W. Russet to the public.a atu amboot epuain n whose expe. rience, activrty and indefatigable vigilance and circumspection the greatest psosible reiance can be placed. Resalved, That during our recent voyage from Louisville to New Orleans, we have ever telts our aoesorc was the first and paramount object of his solicitude and care. Resolved, That on declining to race with sove. ral bhats that seemed bent on passerg hirt under way he was prompted by a sentrment of generous humanity, and a just and commanding setse of the responsobhlricae of is oltioe. Resolved, That we recormmend the Steamboat t E upress as a safe and convenient bolt, and of sof t licicnt power to norke expeditous onut sale voya ges wrthout risk tg life or property by overstrain iug her engine ot boilers. Reaslved, Thai in our opinion the wreck of the t Gen. Brown, together with the lives of six indi vddurrls who were in the forecastle at the time of her explosion, and onabled to qoxricate themselves in consequenic of the mess of robbibh, dead hur see and broken iron heaped upon her deck snd r hatches, were saved from being burned up through the presence of mind, courage and personal exer. troane ol Capt. Russell,-the boat having been a bandoned by those wor could have afforded assier onceinconsequence of the terror of the same and a rumor that there was powder on board. Rrsolved, 'Trat being o practical and aceom pliched engineer, a good pilot and an amiable man, the personal supervicson and watchfulness oi Capt. Russell extend to every deprutment of his boat. 1 Resolved, That as a token of the sense in which . his courtecy and seot in promoting our comfort s and convenrance is held, wo tender him a Sdlver Pucser, and that Messrs. ioullen, Clyde and Sprin grr, be a commitcee to have the stes masoufac d osred with an appropriate inscription and presesced .to him.
