DECEMBER 6,'1839. 1' It is very probable, that Gen. Scott will be no min'ated in the convention to meet Harrisburg this I umenth, and as one of the whig candidates for the b Presidency. But there is not the slightest proba- r bility, but he will be selected by a majority of that a body. We cannot for our own part entertain a i doubt, of the nomination of Henry Clay, should we, however, be disappointed, we like all other good 1 whigs, shahb vote fo' and support the candidate se- s lected by the party. If we have a second choice, it certainly would be General Scott, we have long been an ardent admirer of him as a military man, and we have latterly been led to look upon him as possessing talents of a high order. At all events, t in talent, patriotism and honesty, he will compare easily with the last military President. That the loco's can succeed in dividir g and dis tracting our party, we are not ready to believe. In local elections, certain prejudices, affections, die. likes, or pr,vats interests have occasionally, and too i. frequently operated to our discomfiture, tlis may occur again ; it is natural to all men, except the loco foco party, who oppear to be bound by a stron. ger than Masonic oaths, to follow blindly their file leader. Some such discipline, we acknow. ledge is necessary, now-a-days, to the success of ar party ; the loco's have too much of it perhaps, and the whigs, not enough. When the great day comes, however, we hope to see the whigs united, asn a to band of brothers, and like our fathers of '76, give and take-compromise all other feelings to the sole object of freeing the country from its present thral. ot dom of misrule. The mails are so irregular that oven timhe organ t i of the Democratic party is obliged to rail out against them. The cause at the frqeuent failures is pretty well known. Thle contractors find it much more profitable to convey passengers, titan comply with their contract in carrying the mails. We some few days since, mentioned tihe arrival in this city of a gentleman who came by the mail de route in dueo course, that is in nine days tram New he York. Yet no mail had been received for two days re previously to his arrival, nor for ten days after by wards. The reason; the stages were crowded with e passengers, and the question was, refuse a passen ger who will pay us more tItan the forfeiture we shall incur by a forfeit of our contract, or leave el, the mail behind. Money, interest kicked the Leamn . against duty and tile public interest, and we had of no mail that trip. So it is but too frequently. Is Amos Kendall not to be blamed for this ? Why does Ihe not forfeit his contrast of these faithless and dishonest men, and give it to those who are =c: able and willing to perform their duties. Id Of the nails between this city and Mobile we have little to say. Mr. Breedlove, does not carry them more promptly, titan did 'l'onm6 and Beck ii with, or Col. Whitman ; perhaps he does the best -he can, we think he does, but he has not proper i boats cnough on this line. Races.-The fall sports of the Turf commence here. over the Mietarie Course, on the second Wed. nesday, the 12 I December. From what we can learn, this season promises to be an uncommonly fine one. Already we see our old friends, Adams, and Garrison in the field, preparing. Olivor and Taylor are daily expec'ed. Garrison arrived yesterday, and landed Walter Thurston's Ralph, half brother to Grey Eagle. Col. Oliver is on Iris way, in the John Arms - strong, with several tine hlore, among which is a full sister to Richard of York. In the Mail, are the famous Wagner, Iluckeyc, called the iovinci. ble at the North, and considered second to Wagner, Altorf, by Fib, who ran here against Becawing, last season; and Glorvina, well known on our race tracks. Barrow's stable loft home on Wednesday for this place, among others it consists of I'ressure, (alias Mad Anthony,) too well known to need comment, and some promising 3 year oldJ. Mr. Bingaman is also on his way, with his ata ble;--Fore Eater, Spanking Jack, Bandbox, and the Gliding Snake-all crack nags; and with them hoe has also our old favorite Fanny W right and his beautiful Sarah Bladen, and Martha Malone, Ajax, and his untried two year olds. Mr. Minor is coming down with his two In. ported horses, Don,,aster and Britannia, Sir Ares, full brother to Grey Eagle: Long Waist, Zilis Doe, and Doetor Syntax. Mr. Duplantier will be lere with Roderick Dim` Wren, Dandy and several others of good repute. The celebrated and brave Billy lTownes has ar rived, in company with Lucy Fuller and several others. John F. Miller, the first inventor of racing in Now Orleans, ohas his stable here. lie does not boast nfyour W'agners, Grey Eigles, and all sicl, but he has some nice nltes ; such as Ja-per, Cur. collie, and some young un's, he' a always bring ing up. Wartson is igoin to show off with Bnleswing, Po. ney, Fandango, Little Ited and others, either of than enough to mnake you look straight. Thin tilero is Mills, with linnet, the Quseen osf 'T'rump, &.ec.; D. Smith with Maria Dluker, and Threshly; Taylor with Maria Black, and others ; HIarrison with Pollard Brown; and then comes soome .more Creole. Koonelcr who has here Grey Dock, Richard ofl York, who was not beaten and killed by R.ch. mond, Pieaillon, and a son of RI.lollph. Perry's stable with Stub Twist, and one or two more. Fine sport gentlemtotn .portsmtn. Nuw Or'cons g as rather ahead ofany place, flo ahnost aaything, excepting, slander and hypocrisy. The above list is imperfect ; in a ftew days we shall he able to complete it, so as to serve the dtol1. .rent Jockey Clubs. Theatre --Ptz rro was perflormed tolerably well, to rather a tlhin house on Wedotnesday evening ; we did not stay it out, but remained Iong enottugh to appreciate tha performances of the diltbrent actors. We have seen Pearson perflrern the part of Rlolla better than Ihe did last night. ills reading was careless lnd incorrect. Ili dress did not please ! us. Pearson has talent, and only needs study and care to make the public fully aware of it; be shlould therefore be less negligent. Mr. Field w is at hlome in Alonzo, it is a part well suited to his powers. The first seeFo between him and Corn, was exquisitely betautiful, ilmade so by the quiet acting of bothll, and thtt familiar col loquial style intendetd b. the authtor. It was per Ibctly natora'. Mrs Fielda's Cora was better than any we have witness.l for many a year. Morton . wasvery good in totearro, hI only wanted power to make tho pait fully ell':ctive. Full justice was r done to Elvira by Mrs. Stuart. We have seen a I stronger performance it is itrin; we can call to mind one who trod the stago tlhe very E vira, but she is no more. The chorue was fuller than we have ever before seen it. The stage was literally crowded, and the vocalists, led by Archer, with hIlis fill clear bass I was most admirably executed. Cora's child, or the chihl of Cora, tom ,y have been too large for some purposes, and too, srtmll for others, but it was ofa very good 'size for Cora's child, very pretty and exceedingly well behaved. The Cabs appear to take very well, we see thern frequently employed in conveying passengers from one part of thl city to tile other. They are ta most dlcided envhniencen and ice hope they oo.oy prove prefitable. DOtTORi' WILL DIFFER.
