A Danbury man who has been visiting in a place where the cemetery was provided with many private vaults, is very much pleased with the idea, as it enables a man to visit his own grave and weep. A society at Bayville, Georgia, resolves upon the death of a member “that we buy all our groceries and tobacco of his estimable wife, who has our sympathy in this dark hour, but who should at once restock the store for the spring trade.” A Nashville young lady explains that she writes to the man she likes best only once a day, and says she doesn’t think that any too often, now the days are so long. She is will ing to admit, however, that it would bo too frequent for the short days of winter. A Collinsville mother gave a five-dollar gold ring to a worrying child, and having qui eted itself with it the child generously gave it to an uneasy dog, which promptly swallowed it Any one finding a ring in his sausage, will please return it to the lady. The extent of the sale of popular books is much less than is generally supposed. How ell’s ‘•Venitlan Life,” for instance, which ev erybody is presumed to have read, and which has a Transatlantic as well as national repu tation, has not yet sold 9,000 copies, instead of ten times the number, as is usually thought. The borax industry is attaining importance in Nevada. Nearly all the assay offices, fac tories and mining companies now use the do mestic product. One company is putting up new works, which will enable them to make four tons per day, which will be worth $2000 if it realizes only twenty-five cents per pound. The supply of crude material in the borax fields is said to be inexhaustible. Does Professor Peters want a monopoly in the business of discovering planets. Only the other day he could see no use for any such planet as Vulcan, which Dr. Kirkwood pro fessed to have found within the orbit of Mer cury, and now he comes out with the an nouncement of a new planet of his own. For our part we see no use for any more planets at all. We have more than we can do any thing with now, and we may as well settle Alaska before getting any more. A Cornered Legislator. A gentleman who now occupies a seat in the upper branch, of the New'York Legisla ture, but at the time was a member of the as sembly, relates the following. “Perkins was as honest a man as ever set foot in Albany. Money wouldn’t boy him, and I knew it, but I thought I would have a little fun with him, so I went down to his room oneeveuing and said‘Perkins, what do you think of that underground railroad bill ? Are you going to vote for it?’’ ‘Well,’ said Perkins, ‘I haven’t made up my mind yet, exactly. I am inclined to think it is a good bill; but why do you ask ?’ ‘I thought you were in favor of it,’ said It and as long as you have concluded to vote for, it, I just wanted to say to you that the men interested in it are paying five hundred dol lars for votes, and as it is coming up on its final passage to-morrow, you can just as well have the money as not; you’ll vote for the bill, anyway.’ . „ , •Vote for the bill 1 I’ll be hanged first/ cri ed the irate Perkins. ‘No, sir. If improper means are being taken to pass this thing, 33 you say, I for one will vote against it every time.
