MAN AND WOMAN HANGED They Were Executed on the Same Scaffold, Back to Back. Sam Pars Sow and Mrs. Cordelia Poirer Pay the Penalty for Killing the Woman's Husband. At one time the situa tion DecafTiC ver\ critical and a riot of the most sanguari ary and bloody description was narrowly averted. The double *' lunging was '• in many respects a most sensational I affair. ; The man and woman mounted a double scaffold where they stood back to back with a heavy black curtain between them. The woman met her fate bravely but Parslow had to be carried 'to the t . • scaffold.'' Mrs. foirer walked firmly up the steps of the gallows unabashed by the ts of those wh<> Idbked on. The request was denied, so ; she contented Lw-rself with singing without the organ ac- companlmertt. Tlie crime for which the COUptf nu-t death was I cold t blooded, brutal one. The .woman was in love with Parslow and urged him to kill her husband so that she might befreed. . Parslow was a frequent caller at the Poirer home and a few "days before Thanksgiving the three were at Poirer|s home drinking. Poirer fell asleep and while snoring heavily the woman nave her i<»vi-t > ;■ a knife and asked him to kill her husband. The move is regarded in diplomatic circles as one of gretf significance. It • departure from anything the govern ment has attempted since hostilites with Spain ceased. It is said that a similar order will in 1 few days be sent the commanding general in Porto Rico. _;j; j/. While it is not believed here for p moment thai the government Is adopting suggestion volunteered by Eng land it will be remembered that six weeks ago l-ord Beresford said that America in the PhiUipines should have .1 native army, just .is England hasa Sepoy reserve

in India. TheSepoysare l««v.«l. are good fighters, and in Internal hostilities have proven quite effective. The principal advantage, however, looking at it from 1 cold blooded standpoint, is that a native army under Ameri can commanders, saves the shedding of, the blood of Anglo-Sexop soldiery.
