EVENING STAR. LOCAL INTELLIGENCE. ete 1 Tas Heavta or Wasarneror was never, in the summer season, e have no epidemics hereto- th; ition. any deaths have sonnets 4 the visitors they are attribut- able to causes other than yellow fever. After earefal inquiry, we cannot discover that fatal sesulte mn icaseabla to that source. Excursions.—The first grand excursionand pie nic of the George Washington Club will take place to morrow—the scene of their fes- tivities tho White House. Scott's cotillon band bes been engaged, an anpouncement equivalent to saying, ** Ladies and gentlemen, you will have the best of musis fer the enjoy ment of dancieg.”” The Club pledge them- selves that no pains nor expense shall be ‘is one of the best excursions which we believe they ieem. next, there is to be an excursion to Fort Washington and the White sopal Church, Capito Hil. "A bawd. of goed jurch, ul, and of music will be in attendance, but wo cannot promise there will be dancing, for the enter- tainment is gotten up by church folks, whoso diseiple does not sanction such diversions; but, on the , forbids them to the members of that ination of Christians. We doubt not the excursion will be of the most pleasant character, gratifying its patrons, while they will, in return for their culop ment, be indi- rectly contributing to a | le religious en- rise. “The next on the list is that of the Franklin Fire Company, which will take place to-mor- row week (the 22d of August.) ¥; too, will stop at the White House pavilion to enjoy their pienie; and they ‘pledge themselves that no trouble nor expense will be spa:ed to make this one of the niost pleasant, §Ys and recher- che excursions of the season.” A celebrated cotillon band has been engaged for the occa- sion. The Franklin members always enter heart and soul into everything they undertake, whether a ball, a fire, or a pienic. They be- long to the ‘‘go-ahead’’ independent order, of which all who are acquainted with their history know. Success to them in this their enterprise. The last, though not least, in the programme of pleasure excursions, is that of the American Ridemon to Piney Point, on Thursday, the 23d instant, the fine steamer Baltimore having been chartered to convey the party down; and to prevent a | crowd being in attendance, the number of tickets has been limited. Good music has been engaged for the occasion; and, indeed, every arrangement has been entered into to make the trip both comfortable and pleasant. _ A Goon Exawrre.—It is stated, and with- out doubt truthfully, that ‘‘ siceo the appear- ance of yellow fever in Portsmouth, the Coun- cil of that town has expended five thousand dollars for the sufferers, and their funds and resources are well nigh out.’’ The citizens of Richmond, and of other places, we are grati- fied to perceive, are contributing of their sub- stance for the relief of sufferers by the yeliow fever pig = Norfolk. “ In the lan- guage of the Dispatch, ‘it is all-important that which is to be done should [seteamareg: ly, for the sick are suffering for the necessaries of life, as well as for nurses, which can only be had at exorbitant prices.’’ The following communication appeared in the National Intelligencer of this morning, setting a good example, which should find many imitators : To the Editors—Gentiemen : One whose ex- pertence has taught him the worth of friend- ship in the hour of trial, sends you ten dollars for the relief of those who suffer privation in the “infected region’’ of Norfolk and Ports- mouth. Yours, with great respect, Cc. Washington, August 13, 1858. ° Suppzx Revense.—Last night, a party of four young gentlemen, who were determined to *‘see some fun,’’ put on the habiliments of “Capt. Whisky’s army,”’ and passed through the city in a carriage drawn by a single horse. ‘aeir sport consisted in halicoing at different places and persons. They moved along safely h till on Thirteenth street, near C, where @ new building is in process of erection. They commenced their shouts at the residents about there, but were checked suddenly by driving into a large pile of bricks lying ia the street. Isrerestixa Appanss.—Last night, a fel- low, “‘ pretty well in for it,”’ was found in the market making as ih to a whisky flask, which he had Plaéed on the bench in Front of him. He argued that the flask was ungrate- ful, because, during the heat of the day, he had provided for it, and kept it full, and then, at that late hour of the ht, when he most wanted a drink, the flask refused to yield a single drop. He declared, with an oath, that the flask deserved to have its neck broken, and was about to inflict that punishment on the ungrateful bottle when he was seized by Officer Wollard, and confined in the guard- house. He was discharged this morning with @ lecture from the officer in charge. Tue LITTLE aRricig used by the Auziliary Guard to secure disorderly and dangerous Persons, excites some curiosity among those who have never seen it. Te a quiet looker-on it is strange that desperate rowdies go to prison willingly with men whom they hate, ouly ing threats which ure seldom noticed b the guard. It is all in that “little article ;” small cord about twelve inches in length with a stick about two inches long at each end. As soon as the guard finds that his pris- oner is about to resist, he seizes bis arm, and putting the cord around his wrist turns the sticks until the cord is closely twisted to the skin. The prisoner will go quietly then, as < attempt at resistance causes a sensation similar to pulling the arm from the body. Taz Cextke Manxer, this morning, was superabundantly supplied with all the vege- je and auimal good things of life. In ma- ny of the articles there was a reduction of prices, as compared with those of the former market day. The average ‘“asking’’ for kes was twenty-five cents a peck, and rish potatoes the same. The array of cab- bage was gratifying to the lovers of that de- scription of vegetable, boiled, as well as, the devetees of saur-kraut. The market accomo- dations are entirely wo contracted. The wa- ms of dealers extended as farwestward as leventh street. Pitrerixe.—Some * aggean stole a pair of window shades recently from the establish: ment of Mr. D. Moore, uphotsterer. To-morrow morning, at 6 o’elock, the Revs B. A. Maquire, President of Georgetown Col- lege, Daniel Lynch; James Clark, and —— Shelly, will take (at Trinity Church) the last vows preparatory to becoming full members of the order of Jesuits. The ceremonies will doubtless be not only solemn and impressive, but of a very interesting nature. Since the ‘closing out of their stock of old wheat, Messrs. Boyce & Taylor have been ac- tively engaged supplying their extensive flour- ing mills with newmachinery. The old water wheels have been substituted by new ones on a larger scale, and many other portions of the old machinery has been removed to make way for new of the most approved order. Aout the first of the ensuing week, they expect to commence operations again. Our election, which comes off on Thursday, for one member of the Board of Aldermen, begins to atract considerable atteation. From the present state of feeling. we think that the vote ed will be aie large. It is suffi ciently settled that G. W. Beall will be the anti, and Judson Mitchell the Know Nothing condidates.
