OF THE HAG’S HOLE, A LEGEND OF IRELAND The period of these resoliections was li antecedent to the invasions of od upon the simple manners and customs of the west of Ireland. The wild and barren scene: of that —— of the county of Clare whiel forms barrier against the waves of the At- }antic, seemed to have communicated to the inhabitants much of its own rough character. Uninitiated in those wiles which attend t! increase of ace and mig thei ‘was among them little to disturb the harmon: of their local soeiety. Dishonesty was se: known. They were wil to contribut ] the relief of each other’ ints, and always ready to befriend the needy. Their ha ‘were those of plain fishermen. Fearlessly lanoching their corraghs, or horse-skin canoes, when the weatber permitted, they obtained s Fprecarious livelihood. Constant association “with the steep and rugged face of the preci- ‘pices had rendered them daring. Accustomed 4 “to follow the seal into his hiding-place: 5 and strength were cultivated in them. It was their wont to scale the cliffs in search of the sea-fowl’s nest; and to descend when the re- tiring sea had left the seal asleep on the benches of the cavern; so that through constant inter- course with dangers, they at last became so fawiliarized with peril that they scorned fear. Their amusements were as simple as their pur- suits. The.country dance on the village green, the donkey race, or bowling match, constituted inci of enjoyment. period previous to the date of this narrative these had been the cus- tomary habits of the residents of Kilkee. Its domestic ery, now so highly prized, was then but little known; its extensive strand was more frequently used as a race-course than a thing-place. Little of its original appear- ance can now be traced; the central villa, green has been covered with buildings for summer visitors; the semi-circular bay which “hen presented to the eye but heather and ‘Wildness, is now adorned with lodges of every shape and size. There are few occurrences in human li which press more heavily on the heart than the = we sometimes witness in places which bad been the scenes of youthfal enjoy- ment. We sigh over the simplicity of our for- mer pursuits, and the wreck of the scenes where they occurred. How vividly do we re- eall the natural wildness of the ecenery of Shi Buie’s exploits, now for ever defaced, or the innocence of the inhabitants now also , undiscoverable. Among other evil consequences, at first, from ncreasing social intercourse, the practice of smuggling for sume time held a prominent place. It had been introduced at the riod of Shawn Buie’s history. Previous to time, the forbidding tof the coast kept vessels of every descrip! aloof. N tured pear u P sary demand on natural, considering the appearance of the ‘hich for miles together presented an unbroken extent of precipitous rock elevated from fifty to three hundred feet above the level of the sea The indentations on its breast, the caverns and creeks, formed by projecting frag- ments torn from the parent some t convulsions of Nature, were lost to the eye at the distance to which vessels ventured to ap- proach; and, indeed, could they have been more narrowly inspected, they would not have farnished a much inducement to be- come better acquainted with them, as 1 most every instunce they are quite as inacces- sible as the perpendicular cliff itself. These excavations from the great body of t! cause, in many instances, appearances romantic. Their variations are fantastic, pro- ducing endless alterations in height, depth, width and prominence—encouraging the cu- rious wanderer into situations at ene time per- another dangerous Among several of theso mighty fragments which lie soattered through the waters of the coast, and which bear, deservedly, in many instances, the name of ‘‘islands,’’ one holds a eminent rank, both on account of its size and tory. It stands about half a mile from the land, in height about three hundred feet, and to all appearance, on every side, quite perpen- dicular. It is said to vccupy the space of about one acre. Its surface = a few beep with pasiurage, and the shelter of two email huts into which they may retire, either @t night or during inclement weather. Tra- dition ssys that it was once the abode of a monk who was condemned to live there a malty for some dresdful crime, cf which he been falsely accused, and that the rock was wont to rise in hight auring very stormy weather, in order to keep the Foly man from of the dashing ses id subside he lived for up ind sud- denly dicappeared, leaving no traces of any remains behind him. The name of Bishop's Island has accordingly been attached to it. Exactly opposite Bishop’s Island are two “ caverns, the entrances to which cannot be less than two hundred feet in height, and fifty in width. Their depth was never penetrated. Close to these caverns, at the northern side, there is a steep and ay ho path, which few venture to detcend, leading to a small nook into which the sea calmly rolls, broken in its swell by a narrow entrance. This little nook leads to # grotto, worn out of the rock by the constant action of the wave, returnin th every tide, which expands, as you ad- nee, into a } roomy place, well adapted i am for seals er sm ers. A corragh or small boat could safely unload her cargo here, and by means of ropes could have i ed to the summit of the cliff. At the same time, the descent is both perilous od well concealed fromabeve. A small riva- wring from @ bay three miles distant, for itself a little channel to the edge of the cliff, just at the spot where the de- scent is-first commenced; but instead of direct- ing its course along the path, it discharges its waters directly over the rock, and thus con- coals the descent from any but an accustomed or very close observer. I was ascending this the sutuma of 1s!-. for one afternoon in ‘weather had been of the cliffs smooth and slippery. The face of the reck facing Bishop's Island contains kind of crumbling slaty soil, which yields un- derthefeet, and frequently renders the des- cent of Seah. ane Oh D paket and safe. had taken off my shoes use feet as bands, and had nearly ascended this path, lying #s close to the grou: sible, aud ained stationary until [ reached the spot ar he stood. For a considerable time I kept aloof from the scene of this alarm. Almost a month had elapsed from the period of this occurrence, when the village was thrown into a state of much excitement. A village dance was held on the green, one Sunday afternoon. Around Neile, the piper, were gathered boys and girls, oung men und maidens, while the favo: ass of the village was ng with a gentle- man who had lately arrived. All was mirth and gaiety, when suddenly a man was observed running at the top of his speed from the direc- tien of >kiah. The dance ceased. Every eye was fixed on him. He was covered with dust and sweat. “* Boys, can any of yees save me?” cried he, dashing in among us, and wiping off the sweat from his forehead with the sleeve of his coat. ‘* Holy Virgin, can’t one of yees hide me? The poliss are after me, and I'll be kilt if yees don’t help me !”’ *‘ Run to the rocks,’ cried out several voices 5 es pointing to the ledge at the southern 8. * Tim, your sowl,’’ cried one to a little fel- low. ‘ Tim, show the poor fellow the way to Hag’s Hole; and Tim'’—here he whispered something in the chiid’s ear; and in a moment afterw: they both started off at toward the left-hand cliff. The fugitive had outstri jis pursuers more than he caleu- lated, for he was far out of sight before they arrived. The dance, of course, had broken up, and the party separated, either to talk over the matter, or to turn to other amusements, when two policemen entered the village, and began to search for their man. While he was looking elsewhere, Lola suddenly turned on a full head of steam, and away dashed the engine ata fearful speed, to the great dismay of the engi- neer. Another time Lola was ina car, when she pulled out one of her favorite little clgars and coolly lighted it.
