ARIES AND ARRESTS. — Yesterday Morbing, at 54 o'clock, Mr. John Maxwell, r ate watchman op 7th street, between i - “iscovered that the sboe store of ¥. Magruder, on D, near 7th street, had been entered and robbed by burglars daring the night. The job was performed by no ordinary burglars, as the tools used, a Part of which were left in the store, indicate. The store was entered by the front door, two panes of giass being out of the sash, giving them o portunity to work. They first broke the padiock from the outside. and removed a screw from the keeper of the lock inside, when they entered without difficulty They then repiaced the keeper, and = another padiock on the outside and locked themselves in. They then went to work on the safe, a Valentine & Butler bur- giar-proof pattern, and by drilling the rivets ont of the doorand drilling an inch hole below the lock, managed to spring it with a jimmy, and burst the door to pieces. The burglars carried away the little safe vault from the inside, containing about $150 in money. Nothing else was carried away. As soon asthe facts were reported to the detectives suspicion rested on Charles Snyder, John Eng- lish, the prize fighter, and Daniel Donoyan, who were arrested soon after at a house in Hooker's Diviston, by Detectives Miller and Coomes, and were taken betere Justice Walter, who sent them to jail for further hearing to- day ateleven o'clock. The tools found m the store are & cast steel jimmy, about two feet in length and neatly made; a powerful Pally, used in prying epen the door: a Monkey wrench, drill bits, a screw driver. a cold chisei, mortise Chisels, nut wrench, a hammer, and a dark iantern. With such tools, handled by men Ssskillful as those who performed this job. few safes are burglar proof. About two ‘weeks ago an attempt was made on this store by boring the back windows, but it was not successful. The proprietor had the shut.ers which were bored covered with sheet iron, and supposed that his store was at least compara- uvely safe. This morning Charles Snyder alias Tip Snay- der, Michael English, and Danie] Donovan, the parties named above, were brought out before Justice Tucker, who heard the evidence. There was no testimony to connect them with the burglary, and they were disch: i Sunday merning, the shoe store of Auli ffe & Hartman. No. 405 Peansylvania avenue, near 3a street, was discovered by Mr. Wm. Horner, who lives in the adjoining house; to have been entered during the previous night and robbed. The pad-lock was wreached from the ontside and the door-lock inside was sprung open Mr. Horner heard nothing of the burgiariou~ operations. The proprietors being absent. nothing definite as to the amount lost has been ascertained; butit is supposed that over a #1(0) ‘worth of goods were stolen. No clue to the thieves has been obtained. pS ae ee Ogpxaws’ Court, Judge Purcell.—Saturday Morning (he will of the late Jogeph Follanshbee, bequeathing pid gooaeen portion of his estate to Bis widow and youngesi son, was filed tor Probate. HomMk.—A Disagreement—The Managers try to TWO PIECES, Fote out the Lady Secretary—She Won't Go.—On | Shakspeare’s Comedy of Saturday,a meeting of the managers of the Soldiers and Sailors Orphans’ Home was heid at the Home, 2d ana B streets, (Capitol Hill.) For some time past there has been much said as to the management of the institution, and it bas been alleged that two or three having gained control, have been carrying it on in theirown way. It has also been asserted that notwithstanding the act of incerporation pro- vides thatthe children “shall be educated in the faith of their fathers,” the orphans of Catholics have been denied admission uaiess it was agreedjthat they should be raised in the Protestant faith. 1t is also stated that the pro- ceeds of one of the State tables st the fair has thus far been withheld because the holders wish to see how the institution is to be conducted first, and there has been hints given that unless the doctrine of “no distinction on account of color” is carried out in the institution, the money from that table will not be paid over. The Home was opened in August last, starting With $26,000 received as the proceeds of the fair—the number of orphans the first week being 3, which bas been increased to 16, and it is said that $6,000 bas already been ex- pended The present Board of Managers consists of Mrs. Capt. Morris, Mrs. Gen. How- ard, Mrs. J.C. Smith, Mrs. J. C. Lewis, Mrs. Carlisie, (secretary,) Mrs. W. B. Toid, Mrs Gen. Graut, Miss E. Howard, Miss Charloite Taylor, Mrs. Secretary Welles, Mrs. Gen. Sher- man. and Mrs. H. D Cooke. The bill now pending before Congress to amend the act of incorporation, names the fol- ing as directors of the Hume in lieu of the above: Gen. Grant. Gen. Howard, Gen. Sher- man. Admiral Farragut. H. D_Wooke, Rey Dr. Hall, Rey. Dr. Gillette, and Mr. Carlisle. It seems that this bill is in opposition to the wishes of the majority of the present man- agers, at least to the four first named, who, with the Secretary, were presenton Saturday. The subject of the bill amending the charter was considered, and it was charged by some of those present that the Secretary wasin favor of it. Quite an animated discussion was had, and some of the ladies urged that the Secretary should resign her position. This the Secretary refused to do, and the managers then adop ed unanimously a formal resolution requesting her resignation. The lady then informed the mansgers that she would probably resign after she made her report, and there the matter rests. The Home is at present in the large brick dwelling at the corner of B and 2d streets, Capitol Hill.) The building eontains a parlor, dining-room, sitting-room, and bed-room on the firet floor, and seven bed-rooms, nursery, and bath-room, with hot and cold water, on the second floor. They have accommodations for about seventy-five children, but at present there are but 16. all but 3of whom are large enough to attend school, which is taught daily by Miss Tuttle. Of these children 3 are from one family in Maine, 3of one New Yorx fam- ily, 2 from Philadelphia, 1 from Trenton, N. J., and the others from the District.
